Time zones & us

Last month and for the last few days of this month...i encountered varying time zones for numerous reasons. Today during a conversation with my uncle, this topic of time zones got me thinking....

For an Indian, this concept can be really confusing...or this could be very much a reason to act confused....huh?? Let’s delve a little deeper :)

Our GMT +5:30 time zone is pretty much a compromise...although we stretch from much beyond Bangladesh (which is GMT+6) and till Pakistan (which is GMT+5)...

Now had we followed multiple time zones...could we Indians have adjusted to this setting?? Adjusting our watches to continuously changing time zones...i don’t think so

How do you explain to the poor uneducated labourer or a farmer who is headed to Mumbai from some village in Assam that by the time he reaches Mumbai he would have gained an hour and then lost it on his way back???

For the educated...it would have been the perfect excuse for reaching late for an appointment :D nobody would ever appear early...come on!!! You don’t expect the average individual to lose out on his precious sleep hours just because of some stupid time zone logic :D

There would have been political games too...with some parties wanting to be a part of a different time zone for their region...cos at least that way they can stay ahead of time :p development and progress can obviously go take a hike....we have experienced campaigners who've changed the names of half a dozen Indian cities...while the city itself cries for help

And what about caste based politics??...Provoking certain sections to seek relaxation in time zone adherence...Mr. Arjun Singh would have been at the forefront of such political games...cos his vast experience in creating issues out of non-issues is an invaluable resource to our nation and we shall forever remain indebted to him...

Whereas for the general public...it would have been just too much of an effort to continuously adjust time so we would have definitely found some way around it...after all ingenuity is our middle name :)
